The Markha Valley Trek is popular because you get so much packed into a relatively short period of time. It is accessible from Leh by 4WD which takes a couple of hours and offers some of the most breath taking views you will see in the Himalayas. Throw into the mix reasonably challenging climbs through snow capped mountains, colourful and ever changing rocky landscapes, an assortment of river crossings and you have a trail which engages both the mind and the soul. Enroute you pass monasteries which appear to cling to the rock faces and villages in small pockets of verdant green land (for those who have visited Northern Pakistan you will see similarities).
Rumtse is situated 70 Kms east of Leh, the starting point of this popular and highly regarded trek. Our local operator believes this is the best trek in the Himalaya, so maybe you should prioritise this trek (or share your own point of view with him over a cup of ginger tea in Leh!)
Rupshu Valley lies sandwiched between Ladakh in the north, Tibet in the east and Zanskar in the west. It is a part of the Changthang plateau and is characterized by high arid plains, nomads, high pasturelands, snow-capped peaks and beautiful high altitude azure-blue lakes, the largest being Tsokar & Tso Moriri at 4,500 m. From Korzok to Kiber the transformation of landscape is breathtaking.
