Situated high on the Changtang plateau at 14934ft, the 23 km long Tsomoriri lake is 7 hrs drive from Leh and a bird lovers paradise.
Surrounded by the stark and snowcapped mountains which reflect on the lake, Tsomoriri is also breeding ground to a large number of bird species including the rare bar headed geese, brahminy duck.
Besides the birds, wildlife such as the blue sheep, Tibetan antelopes, skyangs (wild asses), marmots and fox are seen in the region.
The tiny nomadic settlement of Korzok lies close to the lake with its monastery perched on a hilltop above the village. The nomads spend their summer months moving with their animals to higher pastures for fodder and many homes remain abandoned in the summer for this reason.
