The name Nubra is applied to the district comprising the valley of the Nubra River and that of the Shyok. The route to this wonderful scenic valley from Leh takes you over the Khardung la pass (18,360ft) the highest motorable pass in the world. The top of the pass offers magnificent views of the Zanskar range of mountains and the Saser Massif. For about 5 kilometres on either side of the pass, the road is rough; for the rest of the way the surface is good metalled road.
Lying at an average altitude of 10,000ft, the Nubra Valley has a milder climate than the rest of Ladakh and the Shyok River which feeds this valley has made agriculture much easier.
It is only in this valley in Ladakh that we have the rare bactrian or double humped camel. These animals were used as a means of transport in earlier days and some have now been trained and you can enjoy a unique ride on them.
The villages are large and seem prosperous and have thick plantations of willow and poplar. Snow capped mountains surround this valley and some of the best monasteries like Samstaling in Kyagar village are here.
Beyond the village of Kyagar is Panamic village famous for its Hot Springs. The main district headquarters is the quaint little village of Deskit with its monastery perched on a hillock above the village. Nearby and past some sand dunes is the large and picturesque village of Hundar plentiful in apricot orchards.
The Nubra Valley has preserved some of the finest Buddhist artifacts and ways of life and the friendly people here join in readily to provide you with a cultural evening of dancing and singing.
